The children in my classes are a diverse group of students coming from varying socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicity's and cultures. In the fine arts classes students learn tolerance, acceptance, and they develop friendships with people "outside" their usual cliques. They discover that art students have a shared "passion", and they learn that the "passion" for art is one of the "common denominators" in the human race. Our school was built in 1954 and the facilities are outdated for many of our needs. However, we are thankful for what we do have and my students are excelling in competitions, sales and acceptance into quality university art programs. This is despite the circumstances of inadequate supplies, a crowded workspace and little to no storage for completed projects. Many of my students are of lower income backgrounds with no member of their families having ever attended college. It is my goal that the development of their art skills will give them collegiate opportunities.
