Developing a positive learning environment is essential to student success. The environment of a classroom should encompass the needs of all students. Flexible seating is a way to meet the needs of those students who learn in different ways. Flexible seating builds independent learning. Rather than being told where to sit, children have the opportunity to choose the best learning space that meets their needs to help them be successful. Choice in seating as well as clipboards for this seating in order to complete their work allow students to solve problems and become more proactive learners as they age. When students choose their best space to learn it also will build skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills. The purpose of having alternative seating work space for my students is to be able to allow them to become proactive learners. Within my last few years teaching I have noticed students have more buy-in into a classroom and their learning when given the opportunity to choose. Alternative flexible seating would provide another opportunity for them. Research and studies show that when students are moving on a regular basis, more oxygen is flowing to their brain. When more oxygen flows to the brain, they are more engaged, and motivated to learn. With flexible seating padded chairs and stack stools, students will do just that. Flexible seating would allow for students to choose between sitting at a table, on the rug, in a padded chair, on a stool, and standing.
