In Hawaii, we love to bring as much of our students' natural world into our lessons. These incredible, talented, inquiring kids know so much more about nature and conservation than many adults elsewhere in the world. I would like to take a few weeks to talk about coral reefs with my classes. We will do many things during this unit, but I'm trying to make a large part of the assessment a creation and presentation based. I want them to have a product they've made together- a classroom reef. Each period will have a part of the room to construct their reef, which I will look for realism in. They will learn about parts of coral anatomy, as well as how easily the reefs are altered by both nature and mankind.
