"When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read... they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part." -Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. Students learn best when they feel a connection to the content and unfortunately, classic children's books don't represent our student population. A 2018 study showed that 77% of children's literature depicted white or animal characters, with only 23% of children's books featuring POC. Our classroom literature should reflect our diverse students because our diversity is what makes us great. By donating to this project, you can give my kindergarten students access to books that represent them, as well as books that give them a window into other cultures. Representation matters and with your help, our classroom literature will show my students that they are important and they can do anything.
