“Meaningful Messy Mondays” you wonder? This year, I will be starting my week with 26 students who demonstrate their greatest strengths by “doing”. They are children kindergarten-5th grade who are enrolled in three self-contained special education classes at my school. Each lesson will be literacy based, where students will have the opportunity to listen, answer questions, identify story elements, and participate in a group. A cooking lesson will follow that relates to the story. When cooking, they have the time to improve their social skills, increase their pragmatic (turn taking) skills, and follow multi-step directions, life skills that are needed through adulthood, all while having fun. The high interest books used to engage them in the theme of the day provides a consistent reference (background knowledge) for learning for each student. Through cooking, they are developing skills in a functional “real life” setting. My speech room is very small, so these full-class lessons (of 8-10 students) will occur in their classrooms. I am requesting a rolling cart, microwave and cooking supplies (ie., cookie sheets, mixing bowls, spoons, measuring cups, etc.) to use weekly. All requested materials will remain on the cart making it accessible to me and my students in a “normal” way, almost like shelves at their home. By donating to my project you will be providing my students the real life opportunity to listen, follow directions and successfully finish a project with an immediate reward (the opportunity to eat!). Is there a better motivation for engaged learning than food?
