I am a preschool special education teacher for children with special needs! My classroom services children ages 3-5 who have moderate to severe disabilities in a self-contained setting. My students have developmental delays in 1 or more of the following areas: physical development, cognitive development, communication development, social or emotional development, or adaptive development. Since my students have special needs, this impacts the way they learn and play. For my little ones, play often needs to be taught. We are actually teaching students what is a block? How do we use a block? And through this play we learn colors, shapes, turn taking, numbers, counting, vocabulary and language skills, fine motor skills, etc. A lot of my students have difficulty processing sensory information such as textures, sounds, smells, tastes, brightness, and movement. These difficulties can make ordinary situations feel overwhelming.
