I have a wonderful classroom of 21 first graders. They come from all backgrounds. I have ELL students that speak another language at home, special education students that are struggling in speech and language and learning to speak sounds the correct way, and students that struggle in reading fluently and understanding what they read. Our school is located in southern Wisconsin. We have class sizes that are close to our district's maximum amount (25 for grades K-3, 30 for grades 4-5). The total population of our school is about 360 students. Our school has seen a rise in the number of students living in poverty over the years. Right now we are at about 43% and 5 years ago we were at 17%. Because we are lower than 50%, our school doesn't get Title One funding. Out of our 12 elementary schools in the district, only four schools including our school do not qualify for this funding.
