Gyotaku fish are rubber fish replicas used to make a print of a fish in magnificent detail. Students will roll ink onto the rubber fish and then lay paper over the fish (rubbing the paper down) to make a very detailed print of the fish. By doing this, my students can then research fish habitats for that particular fish and draw in details of the habitat into the background of the print. Students can also measure the details of the fish and calculate proportions of fish fins and scales. This project will give my students a hands-on learning opportunity that will integrate science, history, art and mathematics. Students will be able to identify the anatomy of the fish body, explore fish habitats, use a new art medium (printing) and use measurement skills to measure the length of the fish bodies and fins. Printing the Gyotaku fish will allow my students to use critical thinking skills and problem solving in a unique and creative process. It will also allow my students to explore an art medium that has not been available to them in the past. This project will help my students understand how all educational disciplines have connections.
