This year, my very old school building is being demolished to make room for a new, safer, enclosed campus! So, what is the down side? I will be in a room with no windows and will no longer be able to step outside my classroom to see our garden. Last year we started the seedlings inside before sending our food plants home or placing them in our class garden. The 7th graders were the cutest while taking Selfies of the "baby" plants! I was so impressed with their desire to take care of the seedling and watch it grow. They grew herbs and veggies. I encouraged them to create foods for their families with the plants. We made pickles with the dill we grew from seeds, they gave out bundles of basil to other teachers, and they took home clippings of the herbs to grow at home. They constantly shared photos of their plants with me and on their social media pages. I feel like having an indoor garden is an important skill to teach them! To grow food from seeds is exciting and useful! Our classroom needs the Growlab II Tabletop Indoor Garden to have a space and light for their seeds to grow. Later, I will have the students share anchor charts of what they have learned about the plants needs and processes they witness such as turgor pressure, thingmotropism, phototropism, hydrotropism, and geotropism. We will discuss photosynthesis and the reason for the light to help our seedlings grow.
