Sewing utilizes many skills necessary for future success in school. Through sewing, students can practice measurement, basic math calculation, budgeting, basic reading skills, reading comprehension, following directions, fine motor skills, decision making, and cooperation to name a few. Every time my special ed students sew, they beam with a sense of pride that comes from a sense of accomplishment. Help my students continue to learn and grow through reinforcement of academic skills as they sew on a classroom sewing machine. I have been bringing my own machine to school when I can but it is too heavy and cumbersome to be able to bring it to school regularly. I plan to expand sewing to the whole school as I can teach my colleagues how to sew.
