My classroom is full of intelligent, charismatic, energetic and fun-loving 1st graders from the South Side of Chicago. All of my students come from low-income households, and many have only one parent raising them. Some endure hardships that no 6 or 7 year old should have to go through. Despite many challenges from home, they still come to school eager and ready to learn as it is their safe haven, a place where they feel welcomed, needed and loved. They are Mathematicians, Scientists, Artists and Authors, Musicians, Readers, Dancers and Historians, but most importantly, they are kids who deserve the best education I can possibly give them so one day they can help change the world.
