My school is located in Northern Virginia just a few miles from the DC border. We are an extremely diverse school (with students from over 50 cultures) however the majority of our students are also on free and reduced lunch and performing below grade level in both math and English. Though I teach Algebra 2 and Geometry, we often need to work on basic number sense and algebra skills before facing the advanced curriculum. Our school creates time embedded into the school day, as our students don't have transportation to stay after, to provide remediation and enrichment. However with one teacher for 30 students this time is not often meeting the full needs of students. My students most often succeed from small group instruction and interactive activities focused to meet their individual needs. Though many suffer from similar math "phobias" and deficits, the individual skills each needs to work on can greatly differ.
