My students come from a truly staggering array of diverse backgrounds, economically, socially, and ethnically. There are at least 22 languages spoken in their homes in addition to English. Many students live with single parents or extended family. We have students in roughly equal proportions from the white, Asian, Hispanic and African American communities, all from the nearby neighborhoods serving the school. We are fortunate as a school community to have a brand new building this year and are excited to have our students be proud of their state of the art facility. Poor people deserve to have every educational advantage that rich private schools enjoy. These kids will be very excited to see new books filling the shelves of their new school. We would like to amp up their self-esteem in as many ways as possible. We know they will respond.
