We need subscriptions to Time for Kids, Britannica and Scholastic News. Students need print news sources and magazines to enhance their literacy and awareness of the world at large, if not a child-friendly database. And their school library needs to help provide access to these. Time Magazine for Kids and Scholastic offer rich and varied content that most students have no exposure to currently at my school. And the average reading level is well below 500 Lexile, the average level nationally for grammar school students. In the absence of a strong, high-interest, lower-reading-level nonfiction book collection across the school, these magazines will help scaffold up to the books we do have.
