During my first years of teaching, I found out that The Outsiders by S.E Hinton was the book to read among my students. This book deals with the many challenges that my students face every day. Living in a low-income community, they deal with gang-related problems, just like all the characters in the book. My students deal with parent involvement issues either because a parent is not present or they live in a foster home, just like the main characters in the book. I’m still amazed at the tenacity that these students show in the classroom. They face challenges like vocabulary skills and comprehension, but they get motivated by reading books that help them and teach them how to deal with their daily struggles. In five years, I have seen this school go from extremely low-performing with a matching reputation to an amazing community of dedicated teachers and hardworking students.
