It is my desire to redesign my classroom to a give students a better opportunity to learn in an environment that allows them to be themselves. For this reason I would like to start my students off with wiggle chairs to help them feel more comfortable and engaged. There is substantial research supporting alternative seating, and this is one area that I would like to start off with. I am seeking to ditch the boring old static chairs completely, giving all students an opportunity to wiggle while they are learning without being a distraction to others. Alternative seating or flexible seating could be the best answer to this problem as research has shown that students become more aware, their focus increases, they burn calories, they get rid of excess energy, and they improve their metabolism and increase motivation. Physical activity is also linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Currently my students find it very hard to stay seated, and I can understand why as their chairs are not very comfortable. The wobble chairs will let students feel like they are constantly moving and therefore remove the need to stand or get up from the wobble chairs. It is my hope to use this as an example to prove that alternative seating does make a difference in students' ability to learn and stay focus throughout the day.
