Student will analyze conflicting perspectives within Ray Bradbury's novel, "Fahrenheit 451" to explain how an author uses various technique to shape readers’ understanding of the story. Based on the fact that books are being burned within the story, students will research historical events and current events in which the First Amendment to the Constitution has been challenged. They will also read diverse genres related to the novels theme "Challenge of Utopia" to further explore the rationale and results of diverse perspectives. Students will participate in a Socratic Seminar sharing diverse perspectives they have uncovered based on their various readings. Ultimately, students will learn to close read and identify how writers organize and develop ideas in fiction and/or non-fiction text to sway reader's concept of societal expectations. As a follow up to their reading, students will write an explanatory essay to communicate their understanding of the concept of dystopian society within "Fahrenheit 451" with our modern-day society.
