The McKee Middle 6-8 bandroom is a safe place. It is almost separate from the school because it becomes a safe haven for its students to come and feel at home. We use music as a relationship builder in our bandroom. The students and parents look forward to entering our room to see what good it is we are coming up with at the time. Our program has been superior-rated for the last five years because we work hard and we stay focused on the task at hand. The students know that there is no downtime in the McKee bandroom, but the difference is that they love it and appreciate it. The work we put in shows in their musicianship. The McKee band students love music and they love the band and know it is their key to scholarship. I focus on scholarships to my students and colleagues. They know they can use the band as a vehicle to go to get their higher education. I tell them my stories all the time about how music saved me.
