All of my students have some form of special education disability which prevents them from understanding the classroom curriculum in a way similar to their typically developing peers. Most of my students require more visual cues and hands-on problem solving activities for learning. As a special education expert focusing on communication disorders, I need to keep preschool/ kindergartners engaged, and middle schoolers motivated to attend speech therapy sessions; even to attend school in general! Working from preschool to 8th Graders with varied abilities, I need a wide variety of items to target the individualized goals they each have as part of their IEP (Individual Education Plan). My therapy sessions could greatly benefit from the articulation picture binders to practice our speech sounds and processing. They would greatly benefit from vocabulary and basic concept activities for new ideas to practice our language targets. Pickles to Penguins will be fun for all, to get students using problem solving skills for language comparisons! The game will be good practice for those with social skills challenges (such as Down Syndrome, Autism, or Pragmatic Language Disorders). Flashcards and worksheets don't keep preschoolers with communication impairments, motor dysfunctions and/or behavior and attention disorders engaged as much as a Lego based learning set would with all the hands on and colorful Lego bricks! I am requesting new, colorful, creative games and hands-on items to replace flashcards that my students are no longer motivated to work with, in order to make this year our best yet... all while we help each student overcome their weaknesses in learning and celebrate their strengths!
