Our school is a diverse, Title I high school located in Brooklyn specifically designed for recent immigrants who are learning English.; many of our students enter the ninth grade just a few days or weeks after first moving to the U.S. Our students come from over thirty countries around the world including Bangladesh, Dominican Republic, Yemen, Honduras, China, Senegal, and Haiti. They also speak well over thirty different languages, and are all at different levels of English language proficiency. The school is an intentionally collaborative environment. My history class is designed so my students can use their rich prior knowledge and experience of multiple societies. I have curricular freedom in that my students don't take Regents exams; the result is I plan thematic units that match their interest in each other and the world. Examples of successful units I've taught include Migration, Imperialism, & Religion.
