Dash robots are a great hands-on coding tool. Students use the free Blockly app on an iPad to code and maneuver Dash. My students currently learn programming on the free website "Hour of Code," which is wonderful, but keeps them tied to a computer and offers only two dimensional practice. With Dash, students can develop three dimensional challenges and develop code for real-world solutions as they move Dash around the room. Having robotics in the Library gives students across all our classrooms equal access to programming opportunities. Programming encourages sequential thought, computational thinking, and effective use of language. Dash, in particular, builds math skills as students calculate distance and angles. Collaborative coding encourages resilience, team building, and is good for self esteem. And it's fun!!
