I teach in a low income neighborhood, 97% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. In addition many families are immigrants who come from Mexico or 2nd or 3 generations of immigrants. Each year I meet families who are affected because they see their children forgetting Spanish. Not only are families losing a language but they are also losing a culture, a way of life. Our program is Dual Language, where we teach students not only English and Spanish, but the opportunity to value each language equally. My school goes above and beyond to try and fit the needs of this community, but even so the students in this community need extra help from generous people.
