My students are self contained, they are with me all day and they are your typical active children. We integrate movement in our everyday routines but sometimes it isn't enough- their little bums hurt! Various types of seating will hopefully eliminate some of this burden. Times are changing, education is changing, kids are changing but one thing has remained constant: first graders are very busy and always moving- mine are no different. With ADD and ADHD diagnosis going strong in the public schools I often ask myself: is it really a problem or just energy that needs focused? With limited space in the classroom, we are often using the floor as a learning space (which tends to give the kids a little more "free range". Providing the students with seating options, especially those that require balancing or slight fidgeting such as a ball or cushion, will allow them to move but remain at a station and focus on the task at hand. I want my classroom to be a safe environment where EVERYONE can focus and grow. We have come so far with technology and changes in the world- it's a wonder why the classroom hasn't. None of my students are the same- I want the furniture to reflect that.
