Depending on proficiency level, English language learners have many different needs in order to have academic success. Jim Cummins, a well-known theorist in the language learning field, found that language learners transfer knowledge from their first language to their second language. This may be why you hear English as a New Language teachers say, “ELLs know things, they just don’t know them in English yet.” With that said, when selecting these books, I kept my students and their diverse needs in mind. For some students, these books will provide home language support. For other students, these books will support their already growing English proficiency. My hope is that from these books, all students will continue to develop their language and cultural literacy in a way that is accessible to them. Learning a language other than your own takes time, confidence, and support. Although my school provides some resources, I believe these books are a much-needed addition. I know my students will be grateful to have new material they can read and use during Reader's and Writer's Workshop as well as in Stand Alone classes.
