I am about to enter my fifth year at a Title I school in a 100% free-lunch district in the Mississippi Delta. I am transitioning from social studies instruction to math, and though I'm looking forward to the challenge, it's going to require more specialized tools and supplies than I have used previously. This is a labor of love for me; I am an alumnus of our high school and a native of Hollandale. It means the world to me to be able to give students the same high-quality educational experiences that I received here in the district. My vision is active, student-centered lessons where the students get to apply concepts in algebra and geometry to real-world contexts. It is my hope to inspire in my students a love of learning that turns into a desire for lifelong learning. I would like to use the magnetic flipchart/easel as a mobile presentation station to support direct instruction, a message board, and a collaboration board for students. The magnetic geometry tool set and magnetic X-Y coordinate grids will be used to support direct instruction in geometry and algebra 2, respectively. The flipchart pads will be wall-mounted via hooks to create permanent stations/centers for small-group instruction. Flipchart markers will be allocated with one set for each station/center. I want the students to use the double-sided lapboards for graphing/calculation checks for understanding, to minimize the amount of paper consumed in my classroom, and to allow students to easily display their work. The protractors and safety compasses will be used to minimize student expenses in an impoverished rural area, and these compasses will prevent the use of metal compasses which may constitute a safety risk. The remainder of the items will be used for classroom organization and instruction.
