You can learn about a person from what they desire. In my classroom, I have a prize box. Students are awarded a golden ticket for good behavior or classroom participation. I used to put candy and toys in the prize box, but I quickly learned that my students wanted other things. Unlike other classrooms, my prize box now contains basic necessities like deodorant, school supplies, and non-perishable foods. They are raised in communities that would rather work minimum wages jobs than receive an education. This attitude combined with low self-esteem cripple my students to believing that won't amount to anything. However, donations from across the nation and new-age education through technology will rebuild their self-worth and stir contagious excitement among my students.
