Posture is incredibly important to instrumental and vocal musical performance. For singers and instrumentalists, proper posture allows students to maximize their breathing and produce quality tone while reducing tension and ensuring that no repetitive use injuries occur. Currently, my students are using slippery elementary school sized classroom chairs. These chairs make it very difficult to sit properly, and students find themselves sliding backwards and their posture being crushed while they play. This stifles their breathing, tone quality, and in the case of my string instruments interferes with their correct alignment. Students who are larger simply do not have enough space in the current chairs, and they comment that their legs go numb during class. While this may seem like a silly request, proper chairs would go an extremely long way with helping my students to play and feel their best!
