Our classroom needs a carpet for many purposes! Think back to first grade. Would you have preferred sitting at a table reading a book, or curled up on a carpet with pillows and stuffed animals to read to? Having a carpet would provide students with a designated space to learn during whole-group instruction in all subjects. Class meetings are also vital in the social/emotional development of children, and this is done sitting in a circle, learning how to share with and listen to their classmates. First graders also work in centers, and need a space to move and spread out while doing their work. A carpet is a necessity in a first grade classroom for all of these reasons!
