My students are mostly from low income homes, with many living with only one parent or grandparent. There is little parental support outside the classroom. Often the parents do not have the basic knowledge themselves to help their child. So, many of my students rely solely on what they get at school to develop their educational growth. My students are loving and willing to learn. However, in order to keep them interested and motivated, fact practice has to be fun and meaningful. They willingly practice daily, but several are embarrassed that they are not as advanced as their peers. This sometimes causes those students to give up and shut down. No one wants their peers to know they are not as smart as they perceive the other one to be. This tears at my heart and makes me strive to find alternative ways for students to practice skills they are weak in simultaneously with their smarter peers. It increases their self-esteem and allows them to feel "smart", too.
