These materials will help students in my classroom be able to share ideas that they may have trouble expressing with a paper and pencil. On top of being in a primarily ESL population, which already poses academic vocabulary issues, about one fourth of my students have special needs and struggle to feel that their work is comparable to that of their peers. My goal is to give them the opportunity to demonstrate understanding in a non-traditional way and to build a sense of community through art. The sharing of ideas and thoughts through art strengthens understanding of not only concepts but of each other. I hope to cultivate an environment of acceptance and growth mindsets. I plan to implement the art supplies in as many areas of our day as possible. Not only can all of the core subjects be enhanced with the use of these art supplies but I also plan to use the art supplies to help reflect on our emotional and social well-being. We discuss topics such as empathy, teamwork, compassion and many others in our classroom. Students being able to artistically express those feelings and explain them to their peers will strengthen our classroom community tremendously. The clay will be used to create models to demonstrate understanding of social studies and scientific concepts along with other recycled supplies that we have available. The paint brushes, paints and canvas will be used to show students that there is another way to demonstrate understanding of an academic, social, or emotional concept.
