They've read about it and have heard the life cycle explained...but how cool is it to actually see it in real life! To watch as an egg transforms into a caterpillar, sheds it's skin, forms a chrysalis, and emerges as a butterfly is an incredible experience. I have to admit, it wasn't until I was 41 that I finally watched, along with my students, this amazing transformation. We observed and recorded our findings each day for weeks and then finally...in the middle of reading groups the chrysalis began to move. We stopped everything to watch, and with wide eyes and dropped jaws we saw the beautiful butterfly slowly emerge. The excitement and celebration was beyond words...and I vowed I would never let any of my students wait as long as I did to see this incredibly amazing transformation!
