My students are a real mix--some have IEPs due to learning or behavior problems, some are just learning English, and some are high achieving students who don't see how they are going to afford to go to college. Some love to read and others hate it. But, I have found that they all will read if given a chance to choose books that appeal to them and are on their reading levels. Even though we are not a large school and we are in the middle of the country, we have a diverse student population with students from many Latin American, Asian, and African countries. They are all loved by their families, but life is hard for many of them. School is the place they come where they know someone cares, where they will get a square meal, and can get help finding a warm coat when the winds blow across the plain.
