Every day I turn off the lights in my classroom while I teach. I open the blinds on the window and use the light from the Smart Board. Every student prefers it this way...until the dim days of winter and the board is not bright enough to do work. But they would rather it be dim than too bright...and I do not blame them. The lights give me a headache as well...especially if one starts to flicker. And then throw some complicated math problems at my sixth graders? Ugh. Headaches all around. The environment in which I teach is important to me and I want my students comfortable and motivated. If I could turn off the florescent lights, turn on the patio lights, and let their minds go to work, I believe the outcome would be beneficial for all, plus tons more fun. And we could pretend we are on the patio learning rather than in a classroom. Imagination at its best! Once the patio lights are on, reading becomes a little more intimate. The Que Tal magazine would be icing on the cake for my high school Spanish students.
