The music students at Augustus F. Hawkins High School in South Los Angeles are very dedicated, hard working, and resourceful. Most only had a limited exposure to music in elementary or middle school and have learned all of the basics since joining the music program. Since we also have limited funds for private lessons or hiring outside coaches, most of the time we work in collaborative groups to help teach the newer students the basics of how to read music and play their instruments. Unlike many schools we rotate most leadership positions each day by having different students responsible for a variety of traditional leadership roles like conductor, section leader, and equipment manager. Over time this works out to be very beneficial so that any group of students can set goals, organize, and lead a rehearsal in smaller groups to get more done in a shorter amount of time
