Students that come from a variety of backgrounds don't always see themselves or people like them represented in the books they have available to them. I have taught Pre-AP literacy classes for the past three years, and have books that attract high leveled readers. My students need to see their race, socioeconomic status, and all around issues they deal with represented in books in order for it to be engaging. They also need high interest books that have a low readability. There are not many fourteen year old students who want to read stories written for students in 3rd grade- but that is the level they can comprehend. It makes them lose interest. Some students need to have books read to them-either on tape or through audio books, so headphones are a must. We will use "Hi-Low" books and headphones to promote engagement and hopefully created a positive reading environment.
