From day one, my students showed an eagerness to play instruments. It is apparent, every time I tell them we are going to use instruments in our lesson their eyes light up, they are focused, and excited for what's to come. What is so great about these djembes is I can use them in multiple grades, ensembles, and curricula. 2nd grade will be able to use them as they study rhythm, while also developing fine motor skills and teamwork. 4th grade will use them to learn about African percussion and culture. I can also use the djembes to teach any group of students about social and emotional skills through drumming. With these drums I'd be able to use the Holyoake DRUMBEAT program to teach all students about perseverence, socialization, empathy, self-regulation, and more. By working together as a group to make music, students need to listen to and coordinate with each other, which are important life skills. Not only is it beneficial on an individual level, but also on a whole community level. Overall, the benefits are limitless. These drums have the potential to have an endless positive impact not only in students' musical lives, but in their lives outside of school.
