The items requested in this project will enrich both the classroom and the sensory room. Some support literacy, others functional play, and others still will be used to encourage art and creativity. Students with autism require a balance of routine and novelty when learning. Many of our routines are already established; however, students have also become habituated to the materials, making our tools less effective at keeping the students engaged. Sensory integration and functional play experiences are vital interventions for students with autism. They help students transition from simple and sometimes problematic play via self-stimulation toward play and exploration skills that more resembles that of their typical peers. These new skills, in turn, allow students with autism to interact more successfully with their general education peers.
