During book clubs, students are organized by reading level so they are paired with books that are challenging but reachable. Students read, discuss, debate, and dig deeper into the texts. They will meet with me multiple times throughout the week for discussion, so we can practice specific skills and comprehension strategies.\r\n\r\nOn a daily basis, we use the books to talk about different genres, characterization, theme, sequencing, plot elements, literary elements, and more! These materials have contributed to our ability to learn about our self as we build our classroom community through the beginning of the year. Kindergarten students are typically egocentric and through reading stories and being able to use the materials such as the metallic markers to create art to connect with the characters and their experiences, it has helped us be able to develop empathy and compassion for others.\r\n\r\nThe corks and loose parts have created opportunities for us to explore and create self portraits at the light table while we problem solve, share, and take turns which has helped us be able to draw self portraits later in the year. Students chose an animal and researched using nonfiction books and educational videos. We worked for weeks on gaining knowledge of our animal and learning how to draw a realistic picture of our animal. Students wrote a research booklet about what their animal eats, its habitat, and facts they learned. \r\nWe used the card stock to create a background of their habitat. Students used model magic clay and sharpies to shape their animal.
