How can you combine a student's love for cooking and baking with key lessons in math and science? Just by following the steps of a recipe, students can make important connections to lessons in the STEAM field. For instance, cooking/baking is an ideal avenue for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) exploration. As STEAM grows in importance within our schools, why not equip our students to succeed in it? This is why I am asking for various supplies to foster a love of STEAM exploration within my high school culinary classes. Culinary classes are often thrown to the side and thought of as an elective, but what not a better way to connect STEAM skills and principles to everyday life. There are so many skills that are required in cooking/baking that is often not thought of as a STEAM principle. Exposure to critical thinking (within recipes), measurement systems (using measuring devices), chemical reactions (why bread rises), problem-solving (why did the bread fail to rise), structural principles (pie crust strengths, cake structure), and creativity (decorate baked goods to creating new recipes) all can be learned within a culinary classroom! I am requesting Bakers & Chefs Daily Chef Safe Heat and Digital Food Thermometers to aid in our cooking explorations along with a wide array of disposable cups, plates, utensils, serving utensils, paper towels, gloves, tin foil, parchment paper, and cling wrap. These materials will serve as a starting point for my students to explore the various avenues of the STEAM field and open up new career paths to those who fall in love with the culinary world! Each student will be given the opportunity to create (bake/cook) a masterpiece, a true work of art. Providing my students with this creative culinary experience is something they will never forget!
