During this uncertain time there are safety measures that are essential to keeping students and teachers safe, and one is keeping distance between each student. While desks may be a traditional option, a primary kindergarten student learns through play and movement. Desks can be limiting for wiggly learners and students need to get up and move around. During a normal school year a carpet spot was a good place for students to transition and learn new concepts; however, this year that is not an option.
I believe offering sit-spot seating will allow for more natural movement and offer a welcoming and safe space that students will be excited to experience, while still keeping 6-feet apart. My version of sit spots will be to supply each student with one circle polyurethane cushion to sit comfortably on the floor and get up and out of their desks. This option also offers an outlined and defined space for each student at a safe distance.
In addition to each mat space I want to provide students with a magnetic cup holder for the side of their desk to store personal water bottles because water fountain use is not allowed this year. It is my hope this will prevent spills and keep objects organized. Together, these items will provide a more comfortable space for students to learn.
