The graphic novels will be used to support struggling readers in the English classroom for the 2017-2018 school year (and in the following years). The format of the text will also engage students who are reading below grade level. The use of graphic novels in the classroom has proven to aid in reading comprehension. Overall, the texts will provide more engagement and an opportunity for our students to engage more authentically with the text.
Overall, the graphic novels will help assist struggling readers in the classroom and promote visual literacy and storytelling in the classroom.
In addition to that, the creative journals included will assist and support students in social and emotional learning. The creative journals will be used in advisory (homeroom) classes to promote creative writing outside of the classroom. The creative journals will also provide students an outlet.
The spinners were added to support student learning for students with ADHD, anxiety, etc. in the classroom. It may benefit many of our students and serve as a useful tool for engaging struggling students. The running theme of this project is to provide essential tools for reading and literacy in the classroom.
