My 1st - 4th grade language learners come from 21 different countries and 16 different language backgrounds. They bring a variety of abilities, memories, traditions, and aspirations to each day of school. They're adjusting to change and so are their families. Even if their experience is ideal, they still feel left out at times as most classroom content is incomprehensible, and they experience a general sense of disconnect, as do their families. Parents and guardians who don't speak English often feel they cannot help with school work.
I aim to create projects that will help my students bridge their past to their present, their home to school, their ELL class to their other content classes, and their ability to read and speak in another language to their developing English. I hope to also provide shared learning experiences with their families and empower their parents and guardians as learning guides.
