This year, I changed grade levels from first to third. I attended a school in Austin and was inspired to curate a library for my students in which they are represented in the books themselves. I also want to add books that offer insight to other worlds, cultures, religions, and characters. In a session with Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer and Reading in the Wild, I realized that access to books is the first and most important piece to the puzzle when it comes to creating a culture of readers. My mind then went to the small shelf of books that I have and my heart sank for a moment; I thought about how I would be able to offer this to my students and still afford my other back to school expenses. This project would allow me to start with a solid foundation and give me something truly valuable to build upon.
