Student’s will be able to lead substantive and engaging scientific projects using technology and methods that are current. We currently have no astronomy equipment. A modern telescope will be used to enhance our study 8th grade curriculum. The experience gained by students from seeing Saturn’s rings, the Pleiades in crisp detail, Venus in the morning, the gas giant Jupiter with its moons, and our Moon up close will promote engagement and allow students to gather data in new and exciting ways. Students won’t just be seeing pictures and descriptions from books and the web, they will be making firsthand observations and creating unique photos. The telescope will allow students to lead viewing events. Students will have the chance to direct the telescope using a computer. They can view the night sky through the aperture or a connected monitor. Students will take more ownership over their learning. Parent’s curiosity and engagement with their children’s education will encourage a stronger sense of community. Our lessons will take on more meaning, relevance, and be more memorable when they are brought to life through technology.
