My students take care of our class pets: two guinea pigs named Nikki and Penny! Aside from using guinea care as an incentive to stay focused in class - students who finish with extra time can tend to the guinea pigs - the management of our class pets teaches my students about responsibilities and provides them with a sense of pride. Guinea pigs need constant access to fresh hay. Their teeth never stop growing, so they spend most of their day chewing on hay to grind down their teeth. Students refill their hay about four times a day. Small pet bedding is also very important to have on hand at all times. Students spot clean the guinea cage every day, scooping out soiled bedding and replacing it. Every Friday, we deep clean the cage by replacing all bedding and spraying the cage down with pet-safe cleaner.
