My students are ready, willing, and able to become better than their circumstances. Although many of them do not have the best amenities money can buy, they have intelligence and character. They come to school each and every day ready to learn (even when they are not feeling their best). So, I owe it to them to give them what they deserve. Yet, I want to expose them to ideals, situations, and stories that are not always their own. They need to see how different things were/are before them. Still, they will have the chance to make connections to texts, see the connections that the text has with them personally, and make connections to other situations across the globe. This is one of the main purposes of reading: to connect different people on a common wavelength.
