In order to grow readers, young students need to have exposure to a variety of books that are on their "just right reading levels." A just right reading level is a book that is not too hard, not too easy but is just right. Just right books are books, text and print that students are able to decode (read the words) and comprehend (understand the meaning) with ease. A just right book is based on an instructional reading level that stretches the readers thinking; not to the point that causes frustration but rather enables continued growth as a reader. Many students do not have access to at-home libraries and if they do many of the books are not on their instructional reading levels. As students are allowed to check out these books from our classroom library and read them during their nightly reading they are able to grow themselves as readers.
