Our school has created an independent reading initiative to improve reading comprehension and reading grade levels. Students are able to freely choose whichever book they would like to read for forty-minutes a day. Classroom libraries were purchased and placed in all English classrooms based on grade level. This has sparked students interest in reading because they have a choice over what they are reading and gives them a quiet moment in a loud and busy day to relax. Unfortunately, our classroom library only contains books based on the student's grade level, not their academic reading level. My self contained students are a mix of kindergarten and fourth grade readers. Asking them to read 9th grade level texts for forty minutes frustrates them and belittles their self-esteem. My students want to learn and improve their reading for their futures, but currently are limited.
