The flexible seating options chosen will benefit my students during their academic and social learning experiences, as well as when taking a sensory break to refocus their mind. Seating options such as wobble seats, stability balls and discs, floor cushions, soft saucer chairs, and comfortable rug empower children to choose the option that best suits their individual needs. I strive to base everything I do in my classroom on current research and best practice for children. Redesigning our classroom seating options is no different. A publication by the Illinois State Health Department found that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better overall health, and improved behavior. It comes as no surprise that some of the benefits of classroom flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture.
