This project will allow students at CDS to be actively engaged in the process of plant germination while learning to care for a communal garden. This will give students the chance to show that their hard work can produce something tangible, more than a grade, a sense of accomplishment that will feed others. The creation of a community garden will engage students in the real-world use of science while giving students the opportunity to use tools such as, hoes, shovels, fertilizers stakes, and rakes, which many have never used. This also creates stewardship through the growing of plants and the sharing of produce grown. Students will view plant cell structure, the germination cycle, and finally harvest the fruit of their labor. Students learn by doing. Through this experience, the value of science will further their understanding how healthy food is grown, the amount of time and work it takes to grow food, and finally, this project gives students a sense of ownership.
